چکیده

The primary liver cancer (PLC) is the fifth most common cancer in men and the seventh most common cancer in women, worldwide, with the 85% of PLC occurring in developing countries1. In fact, the rates in Eastern and South-Eastern Asia and Middle and Western Africa are the highes. Interestingly, in developed countries such as North America and Europe, rates are generally lower2. The high mortality rates associated with liver cancer are similar despite the geographic area1. In 2002, more than 377,000 people have died from liver cancer in Eastern Asia (about 19% of the total number of cancer-related deaths)3. In 2008, an estimated 694,000 deaths from liver cancer (477,000 men and 217,000 women) have been reported.

Predictors and prognosticators for survival with Yttrium-90 radioembolization therapy for unresectable colorectal cancer liver metastasis

This critical review aims to explore predictive and prognostic biomarkers of Yttrium-90 (Y90) radioembolization therapy of colorectal liver metastases. A brief overview of established predictive and prognostic molecular and genetic biomarkers in colorectal cancer therapies will be discussed. A review of the literature on imaging modalities, genetic, metabolic and other molecular markers and the...

Prognostic Factors for Prostate Cancer Endpoints Following Biochemical Failure: A Review of the Literature

PURPOSE In the setting of biochemical failure (BCF) following primary treatment for prostate cancer, additional discrimination between clinically significant and non-clinically significant biochemical recurrence is critical in defining robust surrogate endpoints for prostate cancer and guiding salvage management decisions. We reviewed the literature to determine which prognostic factors are mos...

The Predictive and Prognostic Value of Early Metabolic Response Assessed by Positron Emission Tomography in Advanced Gastric Cancer Treated with Chemotherapy.

PURPOSE To evaluate the feasibility of early metabolic change assessed by PET in predicting clinical response to chemotherapy and investigate its prognostic value in patients with advanced gastric cancer. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN A total of 64 patients with advanced gastric cancer were prospectively enrolled and examined by PET with (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and (18)F-fluoro-3'-deoxy-3'-L-flu...

Changing Therapeutic Paradigms: Predicting mCRC Lesion Response to Selective Internal Radionuclide Therapy (SIRT) based on Critical Absorbed Dose Thresholds: A Case Study

A 65 year old male with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) in the liver was referred for selective internal radionuclide therapy (SIRT) following a history of extensive systemic chemotherapy. 90Y PET imaging was performed immediately after treatment and used to confirm lesion targeting and measure individual lesion absorbed doses. Lesion dosimetry was highly predictive of eventual response in ...

Prognostic impact of proteolytic factors (urokinase-type plasminogen activator, plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, and cathepsins B, D, and L) in primary breast cancer reflects effects of adjuvant systemic therapy.

PURPOSE Prognostic and predictive impact of five proteolytic factors associated with tumor invasion and metastasis in primary breast cancer were evaluated after long-term follow-up. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Antigen levels of urokinase-type plasminogen activator, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), Cathepsins B, D, and L were determined using immunochemical assays in primary tumor tissue of ...
